Frozen Maidens in Folkloric Fantasyland

by Angeliska on March 15, 2009

So winter has decided she’s not quite ready
to hit the road, grey and glistening furs dripping
ice-thaw in her wake! One last cold snap has
popped us right in the jaw, but it brought lots
of rain- which we needed so desperately!
One last chance to flaunt the velvets,
the capes, the leather gloves and pink noses!
In honor of this one last chill, I simply must
expound ad infinitum about the most perfect
show this season, or really maybe ever..

I think that it is really so incredibly sweet and thoughtful
that John Galliano created a Fall/Winter Collection
just for me! Honestly- this is the stuff of my wildest dreams
and ancient ancestral memories made tangible,
and I’m swooning with covetousness.

I hate the cold so much, but I think that I could
learn to love it if I could only somehow acquire
this entire collection- I’d be crooning Sweet Home Siberia
and bundling up for life. Except, of course when
the occasion called for me to don one of those
diaphanous platinum frosted evening gowns!

I want every single piece- every stitch of embroidery,
every tarnished silvery sequin, every gold coin
and gigantic ovarian armour-plate!
Oh yes, and hello- giant platform pom-pom boots?
Those too.
Wrap it all up, I’ll take it.

This reminds me so much of the costume we made for Miss Kaia
when she played the ghostly silent film star in the movie
we were working on in New Orleans..
I really must finish editing that someday!

Frozen Ukrainian brides walking in the snow for a long, long time
until they are crying icicle tears cascading from frozen eyelashes..

The headdresses and makeup couldn’t be more perfect. So inspiring!

I think maybe this grey ombre only looks blue
because of the light- but really, maybe it should be..

Oh, you! How do you know me so well?

Galliano’s Frozen Ukrainian Brides

The video of the whole show is really worth looking at as well
(but I’ve already gone overboard on this one, so track it down!)
the music, the tunnel- and the SNOW! Oh my stars, so sublime.

I just watched this last night and thought of you! So beautiful… tear-jerking with the Bulgarian singing too.

Wow, it’s like he mined your mind! What a truly inspired collections and so YOU! Wow. The first image reminded me of “the Colour of Pomegranates”–lusting after it all.

I love, love, love, Mnsr. Galliano. He has been my favorite designer for years. Look at his entire career, it is stunning.

Emma: The hairdresser for the show, Julien d’Ys said, “We want people to cry when they see this.” Mission accomplished, sir- because I did!

Selene: He totally mined my mind! Aaah! Yes, the Color of Pomegranates headpiece- I need to make one of those soon!

Heather: I remember the first Galliano show I saw when I was.. What? 13 or so? I fell hard- he is still my number-one favorite as well. When oh when will he find me a take me as his rightful muse? I pine for the day.

This is the most amazing thing I’ve seen in a long, long time!

Galliano is an artistic and visionary genius. I am always amazed and transported by his work. Not just the overall effect but the minutia in the details. GORGEOUS. Sigh.

And yes, you probably should have been in this show yourself and should also have this entire collection as a wardrobe!

Yes, Galliano is going down as a saint of fashion…..

I believe that you too can make your material dreams come true.

[...] It is to be a Winter Wonderland Feast, by way of the Balkans and the Black Forest, to be sure – and then taking last year’s neglected Trans-Siberian Express maybe up near Finland. I’m thinking Saami princesses, a forest of white dresses, silver dowry coins and cuffs, and an excess of wimples and other elaborate headdresses. If this is too much for you, just wear all (or mostly white), and pile on the tatty furs and buffalo robes, but it will probably be rather chilly! Snowflake-dappled red apple cheeks, and frozen eyelashes. Shivering towers of crystal and ice, antler and pelt, snow glitter! Animistic fashions are always welcome, as are Mongol hordes. These ladies are excellent inspirations: Frozen Maidens in Folkloric Fantasyland [...]
